| The global nature and accessibility of the Internet has generated interest in globalization, i.e., making websites available in various languages and cultures. While the interest in globalization is growing, to date not much research has been done on various aspects of this topic. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a system called CGF (Cocoon-based Website Globalization Framework), which can be used to build globalized websites. The globalization process in CGF consists of two parts: the process of building internationalized data from source data, and the process of localizing internationalized data with locale and culture specific features, such as date/time formats, number formats, currency, colors, and web layout. CGF is a major improvement of the previously developed globalization system, Internationalized Faculty Website (IFW). While IFW supports only a fixed type of data (Curriculum Vitae, CV) and direct translation, CGF makes it possible to create various types of data, such as book libraries, DVD collections, and supports indirect translations, in which translations are performed from the source language into an intermediate language, and then from this intermediate language into the target language. Another improvement of CGF is the efficient representation and storage of source data and their translations, and support for translation reusability. Finally, the use of Cocoon as an implementation vehicle provides greater flexibility and opportunities for future update. |
