Introduction It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was the age of wisdom. It was the age of foolishness. It was the epoch of belief. It was the epoch of incredulity. It was the season of light. It was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope. It was the winter of despair. We had everything before us. We had nothing before us. Charles dickens, A tale of two cities The paper borrows its title from Glen Fisher抯 book American communication in global society. This title, the author thinks, is on one hand, general enough to cover the wide range of topics discussed in the paper, and on the other hand, is precise and meaningful enough to give the reader an immediate reference to the main theme that is to be illustrated later on. This paper starts with a chapter on globalization and global society. in this first chapter, definitions and implications of these two concepts are presented, which the author later employs as an analytical leverage for discussions for the rest of the paper. Chapter two and three look to Chinese communication and Chinese media performance respectively, identifying the major issues and pointing out the problem areas that obstruct Chinese communication in a global society. Throughout the paper the author holds on to the global issue that can never be fully approached from a narrowly defined national or state-centered perspective.
