Classification And Symbiosis: Viewing The Ideological Practice Of The Modern Nation-state From The Beijing Botanical Garden

A modern country manifests national conception by various types of gardens,and Beijing Botanic Garden is the collective presentation of modern ideologies.Beijing Botanic Garden district was a part of Royal Garden,namely Sanshan Wuyuan,in the past.It became the site of National Botanic Garden after People's Republic of China had been founded.However,the plan failed and it was just developed into Institute of botany in Chinese Academic of Sciences and Beijing Botanic Garden."Classification" and "intergrowth" are principles to organize plants and landscapes which emerges Micro-practice of ideology in Beijing Botanic Garden.This paper discusses ideologies in Beijing Botanic Garden and analyzes how ideology changed during nation-state construction and development.Beijing Botanic Garden is both a geographical district and a history construction process.This paper discusses its planning and building after People's Republic of China,including the analysis of the predecessor of Beijing Botanic Garden and its results,both Institute of botany in Chinese Academic of Sciences and Beijing Botanic Garden.The Beijing Botanic Garden area keeps the trace of empire garden,such as Wofo Temple,tombs of celebrities who contributed to Chinese Democratic Revolution,themed botanic garden,the exhibited greenhouse and experimental greenhouses.If we observe Beijing Botanic Garden by classification and intergrowth,landscapes could be classified as two group:landscapes of classification presents purification and translation between culture and nature while landscapes of intergrowth mixes nature with hsitorial and symbolic meanings on purpose.Festivals and practices convey knowledge as a garden with multiple ideology.On the one hand,the knowledges express Botany and rationalism by science education,science publication.On the other hand they also manifest intergrowth by appreciation of culture in homeland and appreciation of gardening in other country for patriotic feelings and nation-state identity are shown in Beijing Botanic Garden.According to ideology of Beijing Botanic Garden,theory of Bennedict Anderson on nationalism is percepective but flawed:a nation-state not only imagines itself based on cultural origin,but it also bases on nationalism;nation-states' existences rely on identities among one another in the morden world system.
