The Study Of Pulitzer Explanatory Reporting Award

The Pulitzer Prize has an important status and influence in the United States and the world.Its award-winning work is widely regarded as the most authoritative and excellent production practice work,and the Explanatory Reporting award is an important part of it.Throughout the research results over the years,scholars have carried out research on the Pulitzer Prize at various levels,but the academic community has little known in development history,value connotation,selection criteria,producer characteristics,topic characteristics,writing characteristics,etc.Aiming at the research gap,this research uses literature research method,case study method and qualitative research method to study the winning works of the Pulitzer Explanatory Reporting awards from 1998 to 2019,and discusses the characteristics of the winning works and their reason for the formation of the characteristics.The research try to answer three questions: What is the development of the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting and explanatory reporting? What are the producer characteristics,topic characteristics,and writing characteristics of the award-winning works,and what are the reasons for these characteristics? And what are the implications of these findings for the development of Chinses journalism?The study found that “far-reaching,smooth writing,clear expression,and multiple communication” are the basic standards required by the Pulitzer Committee for award-winning reports.In terms of producer characteristics,although a diverse and inclusive media landscape has become the trend of awards in recent years,high-levelserious newspaper and the media in the Northeast region are still the main winners of the award.Most of the award-winning journalists present the sociological attributes of“middle-aged male journalists with a wealth of professional experience and a diverse educational background.” In terms of topic selection,the award-winning report shows the concern for neutral topic selection,the deep digging of static topic selection,and the wide-sighted supervision,and obvious localization characteristics.In terms of writing characteristics,the award-winning report presents the basic characteristics of long length and narration.The report uses the Wall Street Journal Style and chapter style as the main report structure.The article summarizes the use of four types of typical background information and five types of typical explanatory methods.Based on the summary and attribution of the above findings,the study puts forward four suggestions for explanatory on the development of journalism in China: improve the awards system and guide the journalistic industry with an explanatory consciousness;cultivate expert journalist and reshape media prestige;Opportunities for integration in the age of journalism;to clarify the differences between news commentary and explanatory report.
