With the rapid development of network media and the demand of readership, in-depthreporting has attracted great attention from media, especially paper media, in the world.This thesis compares the award-winning in-depth stories of the China News Award and thePulitzer Prize respectively, and explores the similarities and differences between in-depthreporting in China and United States.By methods of textual analysis, data analysis, and qualitative analysis, the author conductsthis study by comparing the differences regarding subject selection, positive and negativetendency, headlines, leads, news sources, and quotations of the award-winning in-depthstories of the two prominent awards. Based on the comparisons, the author also lists thereasons for the differences found.This thesis finds that the works winning the Pulitzer Prize tend to expose problems andserve the public with a detailed way of writing, while the works winning the China NewsAward are inclined to publicize and serve the government policy with a flexible way ofwriting. The works of the Pulitzer Prize are well-distributed on different media, while thatof the China News Award are dominated by central-level and provincial-level Partynewspapers, with a heavy absence of marketized media. The differences of works winningthe China News Award and the Pulitzer Prize reflect the disparities of media ecologicalenvironment, mechanism of two awards, ways of thinking and origin of in-depth reportingin the two countries. All the award-winning works has demonstrated the will ofmaintaining the existing social system in each of the two countries.Based on the comparisons and analysis, the author wishes to contribute to the practice andtheoretical research of in-depth reporting in China.
