Pulitzer Prize In Editorial Writing Prize Works

Since the naissance of Pulitzer Prize, the writings awarded have been always being regarded as "the most responsible writings and the most graceful words in America". It includes many categories such as literature, history, music, drama and so on, among which Pulitzer Prize for news reporting has the most items and the greatest influence. The writings in this category have great impact on every fields of America, such as politics, economic and social life. As the greatest credit in American news industry, it almost covers all the best journalists and reporting works. As a kind of elite in American social and press culture, it has great honor so far beyond America as to be paid attention to by the whole world.The item of Editorial Writing is one of the two most important that were initially named by Pulitzer. Its editorials represent the best level all around America, and have made contribution to the development of society. So it has become the object of education and research. By analyzing the successful elements and the experiential skills of its editorials, this thesis probes into its editorial tradition, writing rules, styles, social function and so on, in order to get instructive conclusion.Determinative and qualitative research methods are combined in this thesis, with all the awarded editorials as objects, and the ones from 1996 to 2005 as swatches. The ones in these 10 years have been translated into Chinese, and both the English original texts and the Chinese versions are be analyzed. With the methods of representative case anatomy, vertically and horizontally contrast and data statistic, the thesis demonstrates the essential features, concludes the editorial theories, development trends, shortcomings, and what deserves using for reference.In fact, there are editorials in the most important item "public service", which encourages newspapers to report with all kinds of resources, including editorials, cartoons, pictures, even online information, etc. But the editorials in this item are scattered, playing their roles in the composition of forces together with other reporting forms, not the same as those in "Editorial Writing" item. So these editorials are not in the range of research.
