Wireless Mesh Networks(WMNs)are emerging as a self-healing,easy-to-deploy and low-cost alternative to provide network access through multi-hop communications. They have great potential applications in military field where network flexibility is a must.Howerver, the unique network structure and the bad battlefield communication environment make it difficult to manage the network. It has great significance to study a more effective network management system. This thesis discusses the issue of network management in WMNs.Firstly,we study the topology discovery algorithms used in wireless Mesh networks because it is the basis of network management. Two topology discovery algorithms are designed and the one based on broadcast message has better performance.Secondly,we analyze the characteristics and management requirements of wireless tactical Mesh network and design a network management system from three aspects—architecture,MIB and function.Thirdly,by use of CSharp programming language, together with MapXtreme development components and SnmpSharpNet open source library, the network management system is developed. The system consists of a NMS tool with topology management and GIS display function and two agent simulators. The agent simulators and NMS tool are tested in the laboratory environment. The result shows that the network management system meets the expection.
