The national image has important significance for the realization of national strategic needs and national interest demands.A good national image is conducive to changing the perception of the other, gaining more recognition and support, and consolidating its legal status. The beginning of the New China faced the remnants of the Kuomintang and the reality of its occupation of Taiwan and occupying the United Nations seat.In order to compete with the CPC,Kuomingtang actively sought the support of Overseas Chinese and the recognition of the international community, and shaped itself as China. The orthodox representatives and the inheritors of Chinese culture have thus tested the legitimacy and stability of the new Chinese regime.Externally,CPC faced the blockade and containment of the anti-communist system led by the United States. What is more serious is that the interests of the United States and the Kuomintang regime have merged, and negative propaganda against New China has been set up among Southeast Asian countries(especially Indonesia)and Overseas Chinese. The establishment of the Chinese Communist Party's victory in the mainland and the establishment of a national unified political power enabled it to lead and represent the whole of China. The "national" level has become the absolute political advantage of the Chinese Communist Party relative to the Kuomintang.Under the above circumstances, how to construct their own national image and gain more recognition and support,on the one hand, respond to the distortion of the image of the new China by the United States and the Kuomintang, and on the other hand, consolidate the legitimacy of the political power, and become a critical issue facing the new China. The path of national image construction was mainly embodied in newspapers at that time, especially the rapid development of post-war Indonesian Chinese newspapers, which strengthened the importance of newspapers as a medium for national image communication. Therefore, this article takes"Seng Hwo Pao " as the carrier and takes the national image as the perspective. And this article takes the period from the establishment of New China in 1949 to the normalization of Sino-Indonesian relations in 1954.This article also combined with the relevant theories of international relations, journalism and political science. This paper first discusses the concept and connotation, value and significance, and construction path of the national image, especially the importance of newspapers for the construction of the national image.Secondly,it discusses the development of Indonesian Chinese newspapers after the war and the significance of "Seng Hwo Pao" to the construction of the image of the New China. Then, based on the theory of national image and the content of "Seng Hwo Pao",we explored how the New China uses " Seng Hwo Pao" to construct a national image. Finally,it analyzes the problems encountered by the New China in the process of national image construction, and provides some thoughts and suggestions for the construction of China's national image in the new era.
