In the modern Chinese history of journalism, the War of Anti-Japanese invasion has been a particularly important period. The Yunnan province, due to its geographical location, was turned strategically into the Rear Area and played a crucial role in the war.The size of its economy and culture grew significantly while the journalism industry also witnessed unprecedented development with prominent characteristics of its time.Yunnan was the centre of the press and propaganda during the wartime, and the newspapers developed in a path that shaped a model for many to follow.Amongst all,the Kunming version of“Sao Tang Pao”,which was founded in 1943by DU Yuming and QIU Qingquan, was an influential and representative newspaper at that time.Despite the fact that“Sao Tang Pao”was an official newspaper of the Nationalist Government, its Kunming version was a military newspaper founded by the 5th Army of the Kuomingtang, who has direct and independent control over its personnel and financial matters. Its editing team are mostly composed of communist party underground, thereby bringing a set of different editorial concepts and themes to the audiences. It has given the utmost priority to reports on the war and become famous for its timely and quick reports on military news.Based on current research findings, the academic community has done very little research on the Kunming edition of“Sao Tang Pao”,whose name was only briefly mentioned in the overview of the development of journalism in that period,More in-depth,comprehensive and systemic research on the paper still proves to be a valuable undertaking. This dissertation will conduct a systematic and multi-layered analysis on its founding background, development track, contents, features and social influence based on the statistics and literature on historical materials, and examine its media functions during the wartime.By doing so it is hoped that this could complement to the history of journalism development in wartime Yunnan, and explore what a significant role“Sao Tang Pao”has played in the victory of the War and Yunnan's societal development.
