George Brown Goode(1851-1896)was a famous American scientist,historian,pedigree expert,and most influential museum master in the late period of the 19 th century.In 1887,Goode was appointed as the Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution,in charge of the U.S.National Museum,and set standards for the development of the U.S.National Museum and the specification of American museology.Goode not only made outstanding contributions to the growth of the U.S.National Museum and the museumization of the Smithsonian Institution,but also influenced the development of the American Museum and the Smithsonian Institution in the late 19 th century.His thoughts and practice,such as the classification of museums and collections and museum education,have had a wide range of influence worldwide.This paper adopts the research ideas of longitudinal and horizontal research,macro research and micro research,and using methods of literature,case studies,and comparative research methods to conduct a comparatively comprehensive interpretation of Goode's museum thoughts and practice,which will fill the gap of domestic research and provide reference for domestic museum colleagues.Apart from the introduction and conclusion,the whole article is divided into four parts.In the preface,I elucidate the reasons of selecting this thesis,research review at home and abroad,research purpose and significance,research methods,and so on.The first part mainly introduces the outline of Goode's life,including his experience of study,accomplishments and glory as a naturalist,a historian,as well as other achievements in literature,bibliography,etc.This can contribute to full understanding of Goode and lay the foundation for further comprehension.The second part mainly introduces the growth history of the U.S.National Museum that belonging to the Smithsonian Institution.Then understand America's appeal to museums and the importance of museums in society in the late period of the 19 th century.It reveals the important role that Goode played in promoting the development of American museums.The third part mainly sorts out and introduces Goode's thoughts and practice in the classification in museums,mainly including the classification of museums which based on the nature of museum collections or museum institutions,and the classification of collections which based on the nature of collections or the use of collections.The fourth part reviews from a macro level the emphasis placed on education by American society in the late period of the 19 th century,pointing out that museums had become an important area of education.Then it also focuses on Goode's education thoughts and practice from the micro level.By doing so,we can get a glimpse of how Goode,as a pioneer and leader of the American museum's educational thoughts and practice,shaped the educational character of American museums and profoundly influenced them.
