Research On The Media Presentation Of Controversial Issues In The Era Of We Media

This paper reviews the famous dispute about whether genetically modified foods are safe or not between Cui Yong yuan and Fang Zhou zi(hereinafter referred to as "Dispute between Cui and Fang").Based on the platform of the world's largest Chinese news system Baidu news with the carriers of the three main media-micro-blog,website and print media,this thesis explores the transmutation mechanism the media presents under the era of we-media,examining the context and regular patterns of how the controversial events are reported by the media thoroughly from the macro,meso and micro levels.Moreover,it tries to figure out the problems in the media's reporting of controversial media events,providing scientific proof for the reporting of controversial media events,and wishes to make a contribution to the improvement of reporting the controversial media events.The statistics indicate distinct features in the "Dispute between Cui and Fang" reporting.Macro-level features are:in terms of the propagation path,the divisions of the four stages of events were different;in terms of the media reporting,Website's reporting accounted the largest and microblog reporting the minimal;in terms of the news sources,most of them came from opinion leaders,fewer from consumers.Meso-level features are:in terms of the number of reporting,it substantially paralleled the heat of the dispute;in terms of the topic of the reporting,it matched the development of the dispute;in terms of the inclination of the reporting,negative reports were much more than positive ones.Micro-level features are:in terms of the headlines,there were more negative ones than active ones;in news style,more messages than journals;in terms of the balance in the report,the centrist was the mainstream,"quite turn faction" and "anti-tum faction "evenly divided.The study found that the media's reporting of Baidu News "Dispute between Cui and Fang" presents four shortcomings:Firstly,the "pseudo-neutrality”principle;secondly,the tendency of entertaining;thirdly,the poor result of dispute resolving;fourthly,the frequent emerging of false news.In the light of these shortcomings,this paper presents four measures for improvement:First is the demands of the different parties of the dispute should be fully reflected to open the public communication environment;second is to improve netizens'media literacy to clean the dispute environment;third is to develop opinion leaders to take social responsibility;fourth is to strengthen self-regulation of journalists to eliminate false news.
