The advancement of science and technology has become the internal driving force for economic development and the improvement of living standards, but the uncertainty and complexity of science and technology have so far been unable to fully grasp and predict the risks of scientists.Discussions due to scientific and technological progress cannot be completed independently by scientists, and require the joint efforts of all sectors of society. How controversial scientific and technological issues are presented in the mainstream media is the focus of this research. The study mainly explores the differences between the basic media news, news frameworks, and scientific research information elements expressed by the mainstream media of China and Japan,People's Daily and Asahi Shimbun,on the news reports of GM technology. From the perspective of the topic attention cycle,a comprehensive analysis of the reporting characteristics of GM technology in China and Japan.A total of 1,001 reports on GMOs from the People's Daily from 1988 to 2018 and 398 valid samples were collected. The Asahi Shimbun had 4,038 reports on GMOs from 1984 to 2018 and 2,555 valid samples.Content analysis method for reporting the amount of GM technology reports in People's Daily and Asahi Shimbun, topic attention cycle, reporting theme, source, type of GM technology issues, reporting tendency, news framework and scientific research information elements Analyze and compare the similarities and differences between Chinese and Japanese media reports. The study found that both countries' GMO issues are in line with the issue attention cycle model. In terms of subject matter, both the People's Daily and the Asahi Shimbun are mainly news and feature reports. The Asahi Shimbun has a variety of subject matter. In terms of sources, the People's Daily has mostly news reports using government agencies and the media as sources. The Asahi Shimbun mainly focuses on government, genetic science research experts, and NGO organizations /persons.Regarding the types of issues, the People's Daily and Asahi Shimbun both focused on the use of genetically modified crops and genetically modified food industries. In addition, the People's Daily also reported more on genetically modified animals, and the Asahi Shimbun had a variety of issues. There are many reports on the medical application of transgenic technology."People's Daily" reports on GMOs with a positive reporting stance, mainly with positive reports, and "Asahi Shimbun" with neutral reports. In terms of the news framework, the People's Daily mostly adopts a progressive framework, with more mention of benefits in the report, and the Asahi Shimbun mostly adopts a concern framework and more mention of risks in the report.Regarding the information elements of scientific research, the People's Daily and Asahi Shimbun are relatively complete in terms of research credibility, research design and research method description, and contextual factors, but they are lessmentioned in the evaluation factors of the research."People's Daily" has a higher coverage of scientific research on GM technology issues and "Asahi Shimbun".In addition to comparing the news reporting frameworks of controversial scientific and technological issues in the mainstream media of the two countries, the study also focused on the strengths and weaknesses of the news reporting frameworks of the two countries.Analyze the reasons for the characteristics of the different news reports of the two countries from the differences in the policies, cultural backgrounds, and concepts of manuscript submission, with a view to providing reference for news reports on controversial scientific and technological issues in China.
