Cancer has become one of the major diseases threatening human health and life.It not only severely affects the living quality of patients but also brings considerable pressure and burdens on patient’s family and the society. In China, more and more people are suffering from cancer, and China puts forward the plan of building a healthy China. In this context, how to care for the cancer patients and their family, effectively provide hospice and improve the living quality of cancer patients and their families are attracting more and more attention. However, compared with western countries,China starts relatively late in providing hospice.Besides,in recent years, studies on hospice are mostly theoretical discussions about the necessity, development models, ethical dilemmas and so on.Few studies are focusing on the hospice practice such as how hospice is provided and whether the providing methods are in line with China’s national conditions. This essay will reflect on the case work intervention in hospice by studying the hospice practice.Mainly based on the hospice program of the C institution in Shenzhen, this essay analyzes the needs and the problems of the cancer patients during their last days through the case work intervention in hospice and the investigation and interview with the patients, their families, social workers and medical staffs.Besides, this essay is also focused on the methods, the work contents for every period and the priorities of the case work intervention, and sums up from the specific services the complete and detailed process of social work intervention in hospice and the strength and weakness of the case work intervention. It is found in this essay that many problems exist in hospice services, such as the varying quality of personnel providing case work services, increased mobility of social workers, limited service coverage and lagging social support resources. In my opinion,to solve the problems mentioned above, the idea that the social work intervention should be involved in the hospice of the cancer patients should be reinforced, the welfare level of the social workers should be increased and mutually beneficial and win-win partnership between hospitals and social worker institutions should be built.Furthermore, strengthening education and training of medical social workers and promoting social acceptance of hospice are also effective methods of improving case work intervention in the hospice of the cancer patients.
