This is a translation project report on chapter five of Classical Art:A Life History from Antiquity to the Present, authored by Caroline Vout,an academic secretary for graduate affairs in Cambridge University. This book gives an unique exploration of how each period of Western culture has transformed Greek and Roman antiquities and in turn been transformed by them. The report is made up of five parts: Part One is the translation project description which includes project background, objectives as well as its significance.Part Two introduces the background of the source text, states the main contents and linguistic features embodied in the original text.Chapter Three describes detailed description of guiding theory and its direction to this translation project.Taking the source text into consideration, the translator,to deal with this informative text, adopts Eugene A.Nida's “functional equivalence” strategy as guidance.Part Four is the core part of this report, analyzing translation difficulties and methods. When translating the source text, there are some difficulties including foreign languages(apart from the English language),specialized terminology and proper nouns such as names of people and places. The methods include inversion, conversion and division.Part Five contains the experience and lessons learned from the translation process as well as the problems to be resolved.
