With economic development, population migration and the promotion of policies and regulations, the United States has gradually become the world’s largest educational country.Kentucky,as one of the most highly educated areas in the United States, has witnessed remarkable development of higher education. However, after reviewing relevant literature, the author finds that there are few specific studies on Kentucky education in China at present,so this translation report is intended to provide reference for the research in related fields. The second chapter of this book entitled The Early History of higher education is selected as this translation text, which stated the history of the early development of higher education in Kentucky as an informative text in education and further described the turbulence and major changes of elementary and secondary education and higher education experienced in Kentucky from the American Civil War to the year of 1900.Long sentences and proper nouns characterized by the religion in the source text make the translation practice difficult. Therefore, the functional equivalence theory is applied in the translation practice by the translator and the translation methods are further discussed at lexical, syntactic and textual levels.Firstly, selection of word meaning and conversion of part of speech at lexical level are adopted to deal with more terms on the religion and education and further the lexical equivalence is achieved.Secondly, amplification, division and voice conversion at syntactic level are adopted to deal with passive sentences and complex sentences and further the syntactic equivalence is achieved.Thirdly, revision and recasting at textual level are adopted to realize the equivalence at textual cohesion and logical relation. Finally,it is hoped that translation methods summarized in this practice can provide reference for the research on education of Kentucky. |
