The report is on the translation of Classical Art: A Life History from Antiquity to the Present(Chapter 7),written by Caroline Vout, and art historian and classist at the University of Cambridge. The book aims to explore the evolvement of classicism in different phrases and its impact on artworks, especially on sculptures. The translator selects chapter 7 “ ‘Neoclassicism'and the English country house” as source text, which probes into the neoclassical productions of English houses from such five aspects as the influence of classical consciousness, how to locate the “classical”,experience the “classical”,and stage the antique and the classical and contemporary.Based on the skopos theory, the translator identifies the source text as informative text and solves the difficulties in terminologies, long and complex sentences and paragraphs by adopting such translation methods as literal translation, transliteration, zero translation, division, linear translation, reorganization, annotation etc,.shown in examples. The translator summarizes the problematic retrospection in the translation of artistic text with a view to provide new methods for translating such text.
