A Report On The Translation Of Little Panic: Dispatches From An Anxious Life(Chapters 3 And 4)

This is a project report on the translation of chapters 3 and 4 of Little Panic: Dispatches from an Anxious Life written by Amanda Stern,an American writer and event organizer.The book is her vivid and heartbreaking memoir of living with an anxiety disorder that went undiagnosed for 20 years.According to Katharina Reiss' s text typology,the source text is categorized into informative texts,and the translation of this type normally concentrates on accuracy and readability.The translator encountered several problems during the translation process.First,the meanings of the simple words are transferred in the context;the second difficulty is the translation of culturally loaded words;the third problem is how to translate metaphor and metonymy;the last one is the translation of long and complex sentences.In order to improve the readability of the target text as an autobiography,the translator must accurately understand the meaning of the source text in solving the translation problems,and try to keep consistent in the style of the ST and TT.Therefore,the translator has adopted “functional equivalence” strategy proposed by Eugene A.Nida and discussed its effect in translation.Amplification,conversion and division are utilized to cope with the translation difficulties.
