The city is not only the material place which people depend on for existence but also the cultural field which carries human civilization. As the "mirror" of the city, the bookstore which is an important part of the culture space of the city reflects the human landscape of the city and concentrates the cultural connotation of the city. The study of urban culture and the study of city communication are conducted vigorously at present, and the author proposes to adopt the "bookstore" as a breakthrough point and adopt the Librairie Avant-grade as a special "entity" building the city culture space of Nanjing. By investigating the internal communication activities of this"entity" and adopting the report activities of the mass media and the "imaginary production" of the bookstore space as the supplements at the same time, the author explores that how the specific space acquires the cultural significance by means of "communication".This paper mainly adopts the case method, the participant observation, the textual analysis, etc. This paper discusses on the theory foundation of the space view of Lefebver, etc. and on the study basis that the city entity space itself has media features. The whole paper consists of four chapters:Chapter 1 briefly explains the relationships between the bookstore, the city, the culture and the communication and defines part of the key concept of the paper. Chapter 2 diachronically combs the development of the bookstores in Nanjing area and spatially investigates the cultural soil which the Librairie Avant-grade depends on for existence. Chapter 3 explores the construction and its cultural metaphor of the internal material space of the bookstore through the participant observation on the interior furnishings, the spatial layout and the same city activities of the bookstore. Chapter 4 investigates the report activities of the mass media for the Librairie Avant-grade and analyzes how the "imaginary" space production of the mass media promotes the production of symbolic meaning of the Librairie Avant-grade and the realization of culture incorporation.
