In the background of vigorous development of Chinese public libraries' reading promotion activities,it is helpful to learn from overseas mature program experience so as to grasp the development rules and features of reading promotion activities.Summer Reading Program in American public libraries has hundreds of years history,it is produced in the late1890 s.The birth,developing and influence of the program is rooted in American society,and it is driven by education practice,guided by theoretical research and guaranteed by well-developed organizations.With the development of the society and library,as an important holiday reading promotion project,summer reading program in the United State is a great job and are valued highly by the society,it has accumulated rich experience both in the theory and practice,it also played an exemplary role in the nationwide reading promotion activity.The development of Summer Reading Program in American public libraries has experienced three period,the germination period,the transformation period and mature period.The promulgation of the nation reading policy,the promulgation of library laws and regulations,the support of the professional library association,the wide range of social cooperation and the relate research all promote the summer reading program.The research analyses the activity from the perspectives,Summer Reading Program could provide reference in organizational forms,theme setting,reading materials and activities designing for domestic library's reading promotion activities.Summer reading programs have become a significant programming event in most public libraries.Overseas experiences provide us useful references in the relevant aspects,such as service for special group,widely collaboration and active reading promotion,pay attention to the effect of the summer reading activity,allying with multiple external agencies.
