Paper-cut in Northern Shanxi,an ancient art form innovated by paper artists with scissors and paper, originated in the period of the Western Han Dynasty more than 2thousand years ago.Distilled in a finished paper-cut are not only artists' everlasting endeavors, but also intangible cultural heritage throughout thousands of years. As time elapses, these artists are aging gradually and accordingly this artistry is on the verge of extinction.Unfortunately, with patriarchal ideology deeply immersed in traditions,ill-educated women, rather than men, have long taken the major responsibility in inheriting and proliferating this exquisite art.Meanwhile, the distinct geographic location of Northern Shanxi barely cut off the dissemination of outside latest information. With the diffusion of new media into people daily life,paper-cut art in Northern Shanxi gradually breaks through the boundaries of time and space and thus embraces a mode of development. However,as opportunities and challenges coexist, there still exists many problems in front of new ways of diffusion.Starting with the traits of new media, this dissertation, according to “S-M-C-R” mode of communication proposed by David Berlo, analyzes how this mode is applied to dissemination of Northern Shanxi paper art and elucidates the current situation, significance with possible measures of this mode of new media communication. In general, the new media transmission mode of Northern Shanxipaper-cut art has expanded the composition of the handicappers in Northern Shanxi, greatly satisfying the demand of the audience for its inheritance via innovating and optimizing the communication content of transmitting the paper-cut art in Northern Shanxi.
