Research On The History Of Modern Public Libraries In Wuhan(1840-1937)

The public library is the product of the development of modern civilization,and it is also an important component of the library system.It plays an important role in our democratic life and mass education.The study of the history of public libraries will not only help us understand the past of public libraries,but also help us to grasp the present and future of public libraries.Wuhan has a long history and rich cultural background,it is one of the important cradles of modern China's "traffic track",and its modern public library has also achieved good development.In 1903,Boone Library-the first modern public library of China was birthed in Wuchang Tanhua Lin,it marked the arrival of a new model for library;in 1904,Hubei province library was also founded in Wuchang,and it opened a new era of the public library which was govemmentde by the provincial.its birth also promoted the birth of other provincial public libraries.To some extent,the development of the history of Modern Library in Wuhan can be regarded as the epitome of the development of Chinese librarianship.Therefore,studying of the law of occurrence and development of modern library history in Wuhan can serve as a reference for the development of contemporary librarianship.At present,the academic research on Library history has achieved many achievements,but there are few special studies on the history of Wuhan public library.Most of them take a single library as the research subject,and lack the regional overall vision.In view of this,the author takes a comprehensive study of the Wuhan public libearies in 1840-1937 years,by taking these research methods,such as information retrieval,case analysis and verification of Archival hietorical data to understad the historical background,development and influence of morden public libraries.The author wants this study can provide reference for the development of China's modern library construction and library education.The full text is divided into 5 parts,the main contents are as follows:The first part is the introduction,it introduces the research background,research significance,research contents,research methods and new ideas of this paper.The second part analyzes the background of the modern public library in Wuhan,combined with the historical background and social conditions,the author thinks that modern Wuhan Public Library's birth has four key factors:the advanced concepts and technologies of the modern western libraries had been spreaded into the late Qing Dynasty,advanced tellectuals in late Qing Dynasty actively spreaded new library ideas and their library participation,the late Qing Dynasty implemented cultural and educational reforms and the development of culture and education needs in modern Wuhan.The third part is about the birth of the modern public library in Wuhan(1840-1937),this paper is divided into three periods:the first stage is the sprout and embryonic stage of modern public library(1840-1910);the second stage is the preliminary development period from the 1911to 1926;from 1927year to 1937 years is the rapidest development stage of Public Libraries in Wuhan,so it is also called the gold ten years.The fourth part discusses the general situation of modern Wuhan public library service,and gives a objective appraisal to each library service development condition.In view of the development of modern public libraries in Wuhan,the fifth part analyzes the influence and Enlightenment of the modern library in wuhan,this paper puts forward two aspects countermeasures from government and the library,it hopes to promote the development of Libraries in China.
