The rapid development of economy promotes the increase of international communication progressively.As the result,people’s requirement to English becomes increasingly higher.Since 2001,English has become the national course in primary schools,and primary English teaching has been developing rapidly from then on.As the development of teaching and the continuously increasing requirement to the students,to cultivate the interest of studying and to improve the effects of learning have become the necessary tendency at present.English songs are favored by children because of the happy rhythms,simple melodies,and understandable lyrics.Therefore,the author applies the English songs to the English extracurricular activities,so as to improve the students’ interest and effect of English learning,as well as to strengthen the learning initiative and memory in a happy emotional experience.Experts at home and abroad have conducted certain research from theory to practice to the application of English songs in primary English teaching.However,most research are conducted on application of English songs in regular class,whereas the application of that in English extracurricular activities are seldom.The theoretical basis of the study is multiple intelligence theory,affective filter hypothesis,and the input hypothesis.And the object of this study is 30 students of grade 5 who participate in the English extracurricular activities.Three instruments are employed in this study:questionnaire survey,interview,pre-test and post-test.This study focuses on 2 questions:1)Can English songs taught in the extracurricular activities motivate primary school students in their English learning?2)Can English songs taught in the extracurricular activities improve primary school students’ English proficiency?The study found that English songs and rhymes can improve the learning interest of the primary school students,and then enhance their listening ability,as well as advance their proficiency of vocabulary and sentence patterns.The application of English songs makes students overcome the psychological barriers of being laughed,and strengthens students’confidence in English learning,as well as improves the students’ oral expression guts.It also promotes students’ acquisition of vocabulary,phrases,and improves their ability of listening through the combination of the game teaching method and the Total Physical Response.As the result,it promotes the students’ learning effect.This study has limitations as follows:the range of study object is small;the time of study is relatively short.The deeper research of application of English songs on reading and writing is also required in further research.
