According to the national unified syllabus called The New Syllabus Standard of English Education forJunior Middle School (2011), English teaching in junior middle school aims at motivating and cultivatingstudents’ interests in language learning, making them confident enough, forming good leaning habits andeffective learning strategies, and developing the ability of autonomous learning and cooperative spirit;enabling students to master some basic knowledge of English and skills in listening, speaking, reading, andwriting and forming comprehensive language using ability, etc.The author has found that the majority of the students in middle school lack enthusiasm or even seembored for English learning through questionnaires. They are struggling with a large number of Englishwords, or the boring grammar rules or the complex sentence patterns. Gradually, they began to give upEnglish learning.English songs, with the beautiful melodies and rich contents are deeply loved by students in middleschool, which show us the charm of English language and the beauty of artistic conception, and also canmotivate students’ interests and enthusiasm in English learning; therefore, English songs are perfectmaterials for English teaching and learning. However, how to make full use of these materials effectively inEnglish class needs teachers to combine theory with practice to create innovative teaching ideas andmethods.Based on the background above, an action research has been conducted to verify whether the newapproach which apply English songs into class can help to motivate students’ interests and improvestudents’ English proficiency in junior middle school. The conclusion of the study is that English songs arehelpful for English teaching and learning and the validity is as follow:1. The students’ interest in English has been improved through the experiment.2. The students’ English proficiency has been improved to some extent.
