Because of China’s economic slowdown, the hotel industry is more competitive. So the hotel must improve their management to improve competitiveness. But because of the particularity of the hotel industry, its management is focused on the management of human resources. And performance management is an important way to improve the hotel human resources management, also is the core of the modern hotel management, so to design a perfect performance management system is a tendency toward the hotel now. Performance Management plays an important role in the hotel’s entire operation process, which includes performance planning, performance coaching, performance evaluation, performance feedback and performance improvement. Each process points to the hotel’s strategic goals. Performance management provides a working direction to the managers and employees through performance planning; performance coaching pointed out errors in time to the staff and provide the necessary assistance; performance appraisal can supervise staff and motivate employees to improve their ability and performance; performance feedback help employees to know their work conditions and improvements in performance, managers and employees can discuss the measures and methods to improve the work together in this procedure. In short, the performance management of the hotel is very important; it can protect the strategic goals of the hotel to be achieved, making the hotel industry success in the fierce competition.This paper introduces the research status of performance management and related theories. Then make an example of LY hotel, proposed the approach to optimization LY hotel’s performance management system. On the basis of those researches, we analyze the common problems and the causes in the performance management of the hotel industry. This paper also provides some conditions to guarantee the implementation the performance management system. Innovation of this paper is to use management by objectives, key performance indicators and Balanced Scorecard method together to optimize the hotel’s performance management system, previous studies used only a certain kind of individual performance management.
