Since the reform and opening, our country listed companies has developedrapidly, especially make the industry leader raised large amounts of moneyefficiently and obtained the rapid development and expansion. Form theestablishment of the Shanghai stock exchange as the starting point of developmentof listed companies to now has been24years of development. Today, the listedcompanies have become the pillar of the national economy and the importantstrength of stable economic growth and the important support of national financetax. Healthy and long-term development of listed companies related to theeconomic development and national prosperity, therefore how to solve theproblems in the process of development of listed companies, promoting the lastingdevelopment is an important issue worthy of our study.The fundamental problem lies in the corporate governance of listedcompanies, and the middle managers have played a key role in the process. Middlemanagers are practitioners, policy makers, communicators, the role is self-evident.Based on this, this paper referenced the concept of competency put forward by Dr.McClelland and researched the competence of middle managers of listedcompany in detail, including analysis, modeling, validation, and improvingapplication. It has very good reference value to improve competency of middlemanagers of listed companies and optimize middle management team.This article first elaborated the research background, significance, contentand methods. Secondly,summarizes the related theoretical basis, includingcompetency review, competency model review and its research status both at homeand abroad, the introduction of force field analysis and Gretna’s theory ofenterprise growth stage, and briefly analyzed the present situation and thecompetence of middle managers of listed companies, introduced the definition ofmiddle managers and responsibility. On this basis,selected a local and large listedcompanies-XH as the research object, mainly applies behavioral event interview, the expert panel and literature research to build the competency model including35items of competence characteristics for the middle managers, and put forwardthe competency "three related" model assumption of the middle managers of listedcompany on the basis, the35items of competence characteristics can be dividedinto three categories: knowledge, capacity and quality. Then through the methodof questionnaire survey to collect data and statistical analysis to validated andoptimized the model: deleted the confidential consciousness and physical andmental health both; Ability is divided into professional ability and individualability; Quality is divided into the professional quality and personal qualities.Finally,analyzed application of improving competency according to the force fieldanalysis and Gretna’s firm growth theory.
