The document contains many members in his family. Archives, books, newspapers, periodicals and other all belong to the document family members. Each member undertakes the different responsibility, but they all have a common goal, that is, to pass information to human society. Archives as a member of the document, there are many similarities with other document. However, books have the closest relationship with the Archives, that is, both have genetic relationship with common ancestor. And books as the archives for preservation are a common phenomenon in social practice activities. For the press, a formation institution of the book, the press keeps a sample published book as manuscript archives for preservation after the book is published. The sample published book reflects the practice activity of the whole press. According to above, the author presents the principle of converting books into archives based on the forming process. Its Connotation is that books should have the property and value of archives in the process of formation. Therefore, books can be converted into archives and then be retained by formation institution. This topic around this phenomenon will be deeply discussed. First of all, it analyses the similarities and differences of archives and books. Both have a harmonious commonality and unique individuality. Respectively the author makes a brief comparison between the both from the formation process, information record form, property, function and value to perceive commonality and individuality of the both. Meanwhile, the author states the relationship between the both from content, form, formation process, social function and so on. Then, the author makes an overview for the formation process of books and makes an analysis for the subject and object involved in the conversion process. Secondly, the author proposes three basic elements based on the formation process of converting books into archives. They are the knowledge innovation element in the publishing process, the subject value element and functional element. Only have these elements, books can be converted to the archives. Thirdly, the author begins to conduct in-depth exploration as to the principle of converting books to archive. In the first place, Books have property alienation in the forming process. The author should first clear properties of archives and books, and then gradually analyses how the property of books alienates to the property of archive. In the second place, Books have value alienation in the forming process. The author should first clear the value of archives and books, and then gradually analyses how the value of books alienates to the value of archive. In the third place, extended to other documents, the rest can be done in the same manner, like newspapers, magazines. It illustrates the universality of alienating document of archives. Finally, the author summarizes the theoretical significance and practical significance of converting books to archives. This theory of converting books to archives provides better guidance and reference for the future of the document management.
