Eastern Times is one of three major newspapers in the old Shanghai, which is launched in 1904 and suspended in 1939. It had always been changing with times and existed in three successive newspaper modality: Party Newspaper(1904-1908),Scholars Newspaper(1908-1921) and Commercial Newspaper(1921-1939). In the early years, Eastern Times is the sole propaganda of Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao’s Party, advocating constitutional monarchy in mainland. As a result of pale propaganda, Eastern Times broke with Kang-Liang in 1908. Then Eastern Times became an individual proprietorship belonging to Di Baoxian. Di paid attention to newspaper editorial practices with the help of Chen Leng and Bao Tianxiao. They published unfixed political thoughts in the newspaper and participated in political affairs out of the newspaper, creating a new mode of Scholars Newspaper; In 1921,merchant Huang Bohui bought up Eastern Times from Di Baoxian. After that, the newspaper enthusiastically published yellow journalism and was named “Huang Bao”. It suffered heavy losses because of high cost and low newspaper prices.Eastern Times is a Party Newspaper without fixed political thoughts, Scholars Newspaper without commenting on politics, Commercial Newspaper without profits. It results from complicated political and social background and shows a multiple press form of modern China.
