With the rapid development in the media today, the traditional newspaper industry is going through a rough time when being sieged by digital media, and so on. Persisting in stereotype will be grinded by the wheel of history. Produced in the late20th century with its unique distribution model, metro newspaper has become an example of newspaper transition under the new situation.Metro newspaper of the mainland has great advantages. Broad prospects for development of the metro and the metro economy provides a solid guarantee for the future development and growth of the mainland metro newspaper.Because existing11metro newspapers of the mainland unanimously adopted the free distribution which is epidemic in the newspaper market, in the first part of this paper I describe the origin, definition and classfication of the free newspapers, and explain the relationship between free newspaper and the metro newspaper. Then I retrospect the history of world metro system and introduce the production, development and characteristics of metro newspaper. In the end, I focuses on the advantages of the metro newspaper compared to the traditional newspapers and the new media.In the second part of this article, first of all, I analyze the environment and development of the subway system construction in the China mainland, and then on the basis of the first part, I summed several unique advantages of the mainland metro newspaper from the angles of the distribution model, advertising model, business model.In the third part, this paper investigates the risks and problems in the mainland metro newspapers. Metro newspaper fits the trend of the media industry development, but it still faces lots of problems what the traditional newspapers are facing to. Furthermore, because metro newspaper is a new media on the mainland, it lacks of experience, and the unique business model makes it risky.At the end of this article, I offer advice and suggestions for the future development of mainland metro newspaper from the content editing, operating and advertising. I think transition to the whole media is the only way for newspaper to survive and develop, so I try my best to approve myself in the end.
