With the development of the Internet of Things(IOT), there is a need to connect Wireless Sensor Nodes(WSN) to the Internet. And 6LoWPAN(IPv6 over Low Power Wireless Personal Area Network) technology is just developed under this background. This paper mainly focuses on making a research about the data compression in the 6LoWPAN protocol stack and trying to improve it. Firstly, this paper has introduced the function of the adaptation layer in 6LoWPAN. Secondly, it has specifically analyzed the fragmentation and reassembling scheme in 6LoWPAN. Thirdly, it has also presented the header data compression technology and proposed an improved scheme called RFHC(the Rest of the Fragments’ Headers Compression) about the fragmentation and reassembling. Finally, it has designed a new protocol stack for the 6LoWPAN through Contiki operating system, which is then verified with Cooja. The details are as follows:(1) This paper has described the background and application scenarios of the WSN based on 6LoWPAN, analyzed the problems between IEEE 802.15.4 and IPv6 technology in detail, and then proposed some solutions to those problem.(2) This paper has mainly studied the fragmentation and reassembling scheme, and header compression technology in the adaptation layer. Meanwhile, it has tested the latest algorithm GHC(General Header Compression). Based on the above analysis and according to the context, it has proposed an optimization program which is called RFHC for the fragmentation and reassembling.(3) Combined with the RFHC fragment header compression scheme, this paper has designed a protocol stack for the adaptation layer depending on the Contiki operating system.(4) Based on the Contiki operating system and the simulation platform Cooja, this paper has made an assessment test from four aspects: the packet transmission rate, the total power, the total throughput and the average delay rate. And compared with the LOWPAN_IPHC compression scheme, the improved scheme has achieved the desired result, and its feasibility has been well verified.
