With the progress of Sensor and Wireless Networks Technique, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has become one of the hottest field in network area. To "sensor the world", people start to connect the large amount of sensor nodes into Internet. However, the traditional IPv4 protocol isn't suitable for WSN due to its exhausting address space and limited auto-configuration ability. In order to solve the problem above, the next generation Internet protocol, IPv6, is taken into consideration. The new feature of IPv6 such as 128-bits address space, security, mobility and plug&play would be a great attraction to WSN. Under this circumstance, IEFT established 6L0WPAN (IPv6 over Low power WPAN) Working Group which focus on enabling IPv6 communication between LoWPAN devices in 2004. At a word, the combination of IPv6 and WSN would definitely forwards the development of Wireless Sensor Networks. This thesis begins with the concepts and current situation of WSN. Then it introduces the basic idea of 6L0WPAN and illustrates the background technique including IPv6, IEEE 802.15.4 and Neighbor Discovery Protocol. Bases on the above works, this thesis defines the detailed function of Adaptation layer, which are frame format, adaptation fragmentation and reassembly, multicast supporting and header compression. Then, after analysing why NDP unable to work on LoWPANs directly, it proposes the solution for such scenario and describes the algorithms and processes in 6L0WPAN ND Extentions.Based on the design of 6L0WPAN protocol, this thesis presents the architecture of a modularized 6L0WPAN protocol stack and gives the implementation details for Network Interface layer, Adapation layer and 6L0WPAN ND Extensions. At last, this thesis illustrates the test plan, test environment and a WSN Web application based on the implemented 6L0WPAN stack to indicate the correctness, conformance and feasibility of 6L0WPAN protocol.
