In recent years, with the development of micro-manufacturing, communication and embedded technology, wireless sensor network becomes the current research focus. The appearance of Internet of Things proposes new requirements for sensor node’s direct access to IP network. However, at present, the Ipv4 addresses have been run out and a large number of sensor nodes need many IP, therefore, people have an expectation for the next generation internet protocol IPv6. The Ipv6’s original intention is to solve the problem of inadequate IP. It is essential to correct the protocol to adapt to limited resources and energy of sensor network when it is used on wireless sensor network. To solve this problem, IETF puts forward a standard draft of 6LoWPAN. The draft proposes many pieces of advice used to simplify IPv6 protocol. It also applies the simplified protocol to sensor network, which solves the problem of sensor node’s direct access to IP network. The paper at first introduces the concept and systematic structure of wireless sensor network and IEEE802.15.4. Then, core layer of 6LoWPAN, namely adaptation layer, is conducted the deep study. Fragmentation and organization of load message, compress of masthead and address automatic configuration are described detailedly. The adaptation layer that based on 6LoWPAN standard is basically realized. Afterwards, aimed at frequently-used tree topological structure in sensor network, tree route based on sensor network of 6LoWPAN is introduced. Meanwhile, modified address allocation plan and modified tree route algorithm are provided for existing insufficiency. Ultimately, by using NS2 software, it conducts simulation on network tree route based on 6LoWPAN standard and modified tree route. The result shows that modified tree route has an obvious advantage on average delay, network throughput and average hop count, so as to prove the feasibility of this improvement plan.
