The wireless sensor network has been one of the hot researched areas, and how to integrate IPv6 and sensor network has also been an important topic. IETF has set up a work group called 6L0WPAN that works on the research of IPv6 protocol suite based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The performance study and evaluation for the protocol suite is one of the important parts of the research contents. This paper chooses NS-2 which is widely used to simulate network protocol for 6L0WPAN performance simulation and research.First of all, this paper summarizes the wireless sensor network technology and IEEE 802.15.4 standard, introduces the main functions of 6L0WPAN Adaptation Layer and Neighbor Discovery Protocol, and gives a brief description of NS-2 and the 802.15.4 NS-2 simulator developed at the Joint Lab of Samsung and the City University of New York.Secondly, it focuses on how to implement the simulation for 6L0WPAN Adaptation Layer and 6L0WPAN ND Extentions on the base of the 802.15.4 NS-2 simulator, and presents the core algorithms and designs of the NS-2 simulation for the cluster tree topology construction and routing, adaptation fragmentation and reassembly, header field compression and decompression, and multicast supporting of 6L0WPAN Adaptation Layer, as well as the router dynamic advertisement algorithm in the 6L0WPAN ND Extentions.With the simulator developed, the following contents are analysed and researched, including network self-configuration ability, cluster tree routing performance, the network payload releasing by the header field compression operation, and the adaptation broadcast flood control for the IPv6 multicast supporting of 6L0WPAN Adaptation Layer, and how the router dynamic advertisement algorithm balances the requirements of energy conserving and the sensitivity of network topology fluctuation.Finally, it summarizes the main work of this paper, concludes the performation analysis and 6L0WPAN according to the simulation results, and gives the expectation and suggestion.
