Nowadays the wireless sensor network is developing very fast, more and more sensors are deploied in the real world, which exist in our daily life. But it is a big problem how to make the comunication between these sensors effectively. Although IPv4 has achieved fantastic success in the past 20 years, it can not provide enough IP address for wireless sensor network and the limitation of IPv4 address dwarfs the development of wireless sensor network. Forturnatly, as the next generation network protocol, IPv6 provides extreme large number of IP address which brings the hope to wireless sensor network. 6LowPAN is based on these two technologies whose aim is to combine these two technologies together. A discussion group has been founded in IETF to make related standard and now 6LowPAN is becoming one of the most popular field in network research.Regarding to the feature of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and IPv6, we analyze the problems while designing of 6LowPAN and we propose corresponding solutions to resolve them, including management of network topology, address management in adaptation layer, route algorithm in tree mode topology and designing of multi-MCU based on ARM and HCS08.First, we introduce the developement of wireless sensor network and give a brief description of 6LowPAN. After introducing related background knowledge, we give the main picture of adaptation layer including its main function, such as the management of network topology and address, route algorithm, segmentation and reassembly, header compression and multicast support.Second, we analyze the feature of network topology in 6LowPAN regarding to the feature of IEEE 802.15.4 standard and describe the beacon tec(?)nology aimed to power saving. Then we propose the idea of Tree-Mode Topology and give the defination of basic behavior of nodes in 6LowPAN including state machines of 3 different types of nodes.Third, we propose address asignement base on tree-mode topology in which the power saving is fully considered. And then we design tree-mode route algorithm based on tree-mode topology and address assignment.Finally, we propose the mutil-MCU gateway architecture based on ARM and HCS08. We analyze the necessity of gateway in 6LowPAN and describethe main funciton of the gateway. Then we give the designing of the gateway in detail including hardware architecture and protocol architecture, as well as the communication of data and primitives between mutilple MCUs.
