A Comparative Study On The Reporting Of Environmental Mass Incident Between Chinese And British Online News

At present, China is under the circumstance of environment-sensitive period. It brings a lot of environmental problems with the rapid economic development. For the past few years, because of the public’s higher awareness of environmental protection and safeguarding rights, environmental mass incidents occur frequently in China. Environmental mass incidents not only are related to the public’s health, but also Chinese economic development. So environmental mass incidents have caused wide concern.Globalization makes that the relationship between nations is becoming closer. Global approach will take communication to a wider area. Thus, we should oberserve its changes from a broad perspective. With the economic growth of China, our country attracts more concerns from foreigners. Meanwhile, foreign countries take more reporters about China. Online news reading become a main way in reading news because the development of network technology. How did online news media in different countries report environmental mass incidents in China? What are the characteristics in online coverage of the Chinese mass incident’s framework?This paper use framework of framing theory to analyze the “PX incident repotings”on Xinlang, Xinhua, BBC and Reuters by content analysis method and comparative analytical method based on the current scholarship. It discussed the differences between Chinese reporting framework and British reporting framework, and reasons that caused differences and impaction on environmental mass incidents from themes, use of sources, the genre, the tone and picture.Through analysis we get the conclusions: China’s online news reporting framework is in favor of communication framework. The reporting themes trends diversification; But the British online news reportings are mainly concentrated in informed framework. The reporting theme is single. The Chinese media focus on the use of government sources, however the use of British media sources more balanced. On reporting genre and tone, those websites have similarities under subtle differences. The differences between China and Britain are caused by reporting position, news concept, reporting guidelines, and traditional concept.
