The access network is not only the core part and the key to the development of national information infrastructure, but also the bottleneck of modern communication. In recent years, the construction of FTTx access network become the priority of telecom operators investment, the access technology based on PON become the academic focus, among them, the FTTH access network based on GPON technology become a hot spot of the research and application by all sides. This paper aims to tailor a plan that covers the advanced technology and economic investment. The research target is to direct the rational design of construction and scientifically construct a set of GPON network system with FTTH realized.Firstly, the development history and present situation of the access network is investigated and the typical application types-FTTCab, FTTB and FTTH-are scientifically induced, the common access scenes of FTTH are mainly analyzed, and some problems of FTTH development at this stage are discussed. Then, on the one hand, the key technology, the frame structure, the encapsulation and the transmission container of GPON are specifically elaborated, the technology evolution and the standardization progress of the GPON are combed, and the future development of the technology is predicted. On the other hand, giving a comprehensive study on optical access network planning and designing which respectively from two aspects of the active equipment and passive optical network (ODN) and the relevant supporting equipments are introduced in details. Finally, a set of design programs is done to ensure the representation and applicability as much as possible and meet the system indicators of communication performance by reasonable application of GPON related theory and observing the basic principles of network construction. This is realized by taking the actual demand of the community and objective access condition into account. Moreover, the comprehensive test of various main indicators is completed, after which the engineering meaning and deficiency and responsive correction action are suggested. A standardized reference design template is fabricated for the future design, which can be somewhat referenced to study how to give solutions to the full-service access network.
