With the explosive development of Internet, IPv4 protocol, which is one of the network base protocols, is about to go to the end due to its flaws. To build the Internet of the next generation, deploying IPv6 in a large-scale has become the expectation of every country. Colleges and universities play an important role in the scientific research field in China, and campus IPv6 network is a good text field, which can provide experience and reference for the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 in large-scale.In this paper, the key technologies, including the message structure, addressing architecture, ICMPv6, routing technology and security are analyzed in detail, the transition mechanism from IPv4 to IPv6 is discussed, and the common dual stack, tunneling technology and transformation mechanism, as well as the advantages and disadvantages are analyzed with emphasis. On this basis, static NAT-PT, dynamic NAT-PT, tunnel transition and other experiments are realized with the method of experimental verification, and correct experiment results are obtained. Therefore, the feasibility of IPv4 transiting to IPv6 is verified, which provides the firsthand data for the situation the colleges may run into during transition period. In addition, instant messaging under IPv6 is explored, and UPD communication test under IPv6 is successfully conducted in Windows environment by means of Socket interface programming. Finally, aiming at the upgrade and transition from IPv4 to IPv6 of campus network, the periodical demands of the campus network in the transition period are demonstrated in detail. The designing plan is proposed by taking one college as example, and the updated campus network architecture is offered, which solves IPv4/IPv6 network intercommunication and inter-process communication of IPv6 in the transition of IPv6 campus network. Besides, the IP address assignment and equipment upgrade are discussed. In addition, some application services are disposed which support IPv6 protocol, such as DNS, WWW, FTP, etc.In conclusion, IPv6 is a revolutionary technology requiring our concertration from comprehensive perspectives. It is hoped that we can make positive and effective contribution to the construction of the next-generation network based on IPv6 by grasping the opportunity of its great development.
