With the rapid increase of Internet and the gradually depleting of IPv4 address,Internet isconfronted with many chanllenges:the scale,the security,the QoS,the simple configureation etc. These chanllenges show the new Internet protocol version will replace IPv4 necessarily.IPv6 is the next Internet protocol,the new characters of IPv6 will provide more perfect support and wider foreground for the application and development of the next generation network.IPv4 replaced by IPv6 couldn't be brought to success in one night that,they will exist within a very long time.IPv6 isn't simple upgrading edition of IPv4,because of the difference of head characteristic and address format,they are unable to be totally compatible.It must be solved how to transit to IPv6 gradually and smoothly,as the next Internet Protocol,IPv6 have already got much application in Internet,but a lot of questions must be improved and perfected,the complete transition from IPv4 to IPv6 need very long time still,different network structure will have one's own transition policy too.it is introduced that IPv6 protocol at first,including IPv6 new characteristic,the data form of IPv6 and comparison with IPv4,IPv6 address system structure,ICMPv6 protocol,neighhour discover mechanism,IPv6 route protocol,IPv6 safe mechanism:IPSec,etc.Then the idiographic protocol stack,the tunnel technology,translating mechanism.In order to realize campus network transition from IPv4 to IPv6,one IPv6 scheme based on soft route is introduced,and has carried network experiment on Linux systematic platform,has disposed some application services which support IPv6 protocol:such as WWW,FTP,DNS,etc.
