With the development of national economy and the formation of expressway network, the electronic toll collection technology (Electronic Toll Collection, ETC) in the expressway toll system has been widely applied. This system can ease bottleneck of the toll collection in the greatest degree, and avoid traffic jam and vehicle delay caused by inefficient toll collection, so as to make the vehicle pass the highway rapidly and conveniently. The ETC system is an important component in the intelligent transportation system, which is based on the Radio Frequency Identification (Radio Frequency Identification, RFID), the basic idea of the system is the non-parking vehicles completed the process of charging between vehicle’s identification and ground wireless data communications facilities, therefore could be achieve the non-parking charges. ETC system consists of two parts front-end system and back-office service system, the front-end using the ETC lane isolation systems are often referred to as single-lane electronic toll collection system. The author has been personally involved in the execution of the ETC project during the work experience and the research of the thesis has combined with graduated studies basis on the article. Firstly, this paper progressive approach to the front of the ETC system, the RFID technology in the application of a comprehensive study, it has covering the standards and principles of such interactions, and has focusing on the discussed the coupling of the RFID. Secondly, analysis the needs of users and clear design the objectives by the overall ETC front-end system scheme. Thirdly, in the design and implementation of hardware part, it has applied the idea of modular design to optimize the technical specifications of equipment, satisfying the front-end system sub-function. In the design and implementation of software part, the communication frequency of5.8GHz RFID-based Dedicated Short Range Communication Protocol (Dedicated Short Range Communication, DSRC), each layers in detail the technical requirements, and proposed ETC front-end system enters and exits the workflow, and implementation of the lane to meet the process control software application. Finally, this paper summarizes the work, and puts forward the problems need to be improved and looks forward to the prospects of the system applications.
