Curriculum is the core of the higher education. The study of curriculum is still a weak link for the present research on Chinese higher education. For the study of curriculum, researchers should insist on the principle of case by case because different subject has different ways of curriculum setting.Journalism and Communication is a subject with strong practicality, and its curriculum is being adjusted under the influence of times background and industrial development. Chinese journalism education has always learned from America since itsinception, and formed certain of advantages up to now. Compared with American journalism education, China still has a long way to go. Especially with the emphasis on general education in Chinese higher education, the reform of journalism education will be more difficult, particularly in the aspect of curriculum setting. This thesis compares the curriculum of undergraduate education in Journalism and Communication between China and America using Fudan University and University of Missouri as examples. The author hopes that it could offer some reference for the curriculum reform for practical subjects. The content mainly includes three aspects as follows. The first part examines the birth and developmentalhistory of curriculum in FudanUniversity and University of Missouri. Compare two universities above three dimensions:training objectives, course structure and curriculumcontent. The content of comparison includes different characteristics of training objectives in different periods, the feature and difference of course structure and curriculum content. The second part is about the thinking of training objectives, course structure and curriculumcontent on journalism education based on the comparative analysis. The different orientation of training objectives reflects different target value orientation, subject function orientation and the understanding of the nature of course. The different setting of course structure raises thinking of how to set core course for journalism education and how to reform course structure under the background of media convergence. The different arrange of curriculum content emphasizes the importance of thinking training and the influence of teachers’ quality. The third part is a crossing from the individual to the ordinary. That means based on the comparative analysis on Journalism and Communication, it can conclude that practical subjects should transfer three ideas as follows when reforming the curriculum. First, transfer talent concept from skill training to thinking training. Second, adjust course structure form specialization to integration. Third, deepen curriculum content from simplification to diversity. This thesis breaks the previous research perspective and focuses on the curriculum setting of a specific major to discuss the curriculum reform of higher education. Meanwhile, through the comparative analysis from three dimensions of training objectives, course structure and curriculumcontent, the thesis enriches the research of curriculum and makes it more substantial. Finally, the research findings are applied to practical subjects such as Management, Jurisprudence and Education in the aspect of the undergraduate curriculum.
