Research Of Journalists’ Scientific Literacy

As an important quality of journalist, scientific literacy makes an immediateimpact to information transformation and improvement of news report quality,pushing the development of news media and social civilization. This thesis is trying toexplore the content and intention of scientific literacy, sum up phenomenon of lackingscientific literacy occurred in reporting, analyze the reasons and bring out someadvice to reconstruction of scientific literacy.Scientific literacy is a developing notion, which means master requisite scientificand cultural knowledge, stick to scientific method, establish scientific spirit andcultivate scientific ability to solve practical problems. Scientific literacy contains fourparts, that is scientific knowledge, scientific spirit, scientific method and scientificconcept. Mastering scientific knowledge is the base and prerequisite quality, stic kingto scientific spirit and scientific method is the core and critical point, while advancingand enriching scientific spirit and publicizing scientific concept is the final standpointReporting works reflect scientific literacy of pressman and differen t reportingfield has different demand. Lacking scientific analysis shows the lack of scientificliteracy, such as news lack of common sense, shortage of scientific spirit innews-covering, putting amusement above everything else, small quantity of scientificreporting and so on. Pressman can’t judge pseudoscience and can’t grasp importantscientific achievement.How come this kind of situation? Several factors bring in the lack of scientificliteracy of pressman. This thesis thinks that shortage of knowledge is the direct reason,shortfall professionalism is the main and deeper reason. Short of knowledge, shortfallprofessionalism, little cultivation of literacy and limitless of social acceptance causethe limit level of scientific literacy. In order to reverse this condition to reestablishscientific literacy in professional journalism, press workers need to strengthen theideological building to promote self quality with the purpose of enhancing scientificspirit, cultivating scientific ability and promoting scientific literacy.
