Sheet metal parts which are widely used in aviation manufacturing fields are one of the mainparts in the whole structure of a plane. There are a plenty species of sheet metal parts in aircraftmanufacturing. The shape of sheet metal parts is complicated and also consist of some3D surfaces.As a result, it takes a lot of hard work to design sheet metal molds. Although CAD/CAMtechnology has been widely used, there is still a gap between theory and practical application.Some bottleneck problems of mold designing still remain to be solved. It is necessary to deeplystudy CAD technology of sheet metal mold.According to the demands of the enterprise, this paper uses Rubber Pad Forming and drawingdie as research object and summarizes the present designing process and existing problems ofthese two species. Some related design methods such as knowledge engineering, featuretechnology and parametric design are used in developing CAD system of aviation sheet metalmold. The System is developed based on the secondary development tool CAA on CATIAplatform. This article mainly includes the following four parts:(1) The designing process of Rubber Pad Forming and drawing die are summarized. Themodular design methods such as procedure-oriented and top-down are used in designing overallplan of CAD system of typical aviation sheet metal mold.(2) Based on the actual requirements of users, the fast calculation methods of processinformation of Rubber Pad Forming and drawing die are researched. The solutions of mold datumplane and center line of pressure in CAD system are also researched. On the basis of theseresearches, the auxiliary process calculation module of aviation sheet metal mold is developed.(3) The method of self-adaptive parametric design based on mold-surface is used in thedevelopment process of rapid design module of mold body. The module contains the rapid designfunction of rigid mold of sheet metal mold and punch-cum-blanking mold of drawing molding.The case database of mold base scheme and the model database of the parameterized standardparts which are built on the analysis of mold base structure types of drawing molding are based onrules of organization strategy. These two databases realize the fast design of mold base.(4) The rapid generation technology of rubber pad forming is studied. The Self-adaptiveparametric design method based on surface is used in rapid designing of module. All of thesemake rapid molding of punch-cum-blanking die of rubber pad forming and drawing die come true.
