| ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to describe nurses’ psychological empowerment and its relationship with demographic factors. This research also aimed at evaluating the effect of the solution-focus approach in psychologicalempowerment among nurse staff.MethodsA convenience sample of bedside nurses in four surgical wards in a general hospital of ZhejiangProvince were assigned into an empowerment group (n=35) and a control group (n=34). A solution-focused training program based on psychological empowerment lasted for six months was carriedout to enable bedside nurses apply solution-focused approach in their work situation. Data on self-assessed psychological empowerment was collected before and after the intervention. T-test, Wilcoxon test, Mann-Whitney U test were used to analysis the effect of the intervention.ResultsThe average score of psychological empowerment of bedside nurse was3.71±0.38. The rank from the highest to the lowest of four dimensions were self-determination, self-efficacy, meaning and impact. Age, marriage, title, job position and length of work were significantly related to psychological empowerment. The experimental group reported significantly higher psychological empowerment and meaning subscalethan the control group after the intervention. When compared over time in the respective groups, there was a significant improvement of psychological empowerment, meaning and self-efficacy in the intervention group while there were no statistically significant differences in the comparison group.ConclusionsBedside nurses report a moderate level of psychological empowerment. The solution-focus approach had significant effect on psychological empowerment and subscales of meaning and self-efficacy. |
