ObjectiveThe purpose of this research is to study the improvement of the patients’ voice quality who suffers from chronic hoarseness by the comprehensive treatment of Chinese medicine combing with voice therapy. Through comparing with the main and objective voice therapy indexes between the treatment group and the control group before and after treatment, the voice training is valuable for treating patients who suffers from chronic hoarseness.Methods80patients who suffered from chronic hoarseness (vocal nodules, vocal polyps and chronic laryngitis) were treated in outpatient clinic of otolaryngology department in the first affiliated hospital of Guangzhou university of TCM between January1st,2013and December31st,2013. Using stratified random distribution method, these patients were divided into the treatment group and the control group, each for40cases. Both groups were treated by the comprehensive treatment of Chinese medicine, and the treatment group would add the adjunctive treatment of voice training. All patients would be treated for two months and review after two-month treating. As the scale score and changes of the spectrum analysis parameters for the evaluated indicators of curative effect, compared with subjective symptom checklist of voice and the changes of objective analysis of the parameters between two groups for the first day and after two-month treated.ResultsThe two groups had got an information balance on the general information (gender, age, profession, course of disease and disease distribution). There was no significant difference among the statistics (subjects’VoiSS, I, P, E, manner of articulation, F0, Jitter, Shimmer and NHR) before treatment. Therefore, they were comparable before treatment. After two-month treatment, in the voice therapy group,12cases were clinical cure,28cases were improved and0case was inefficient. Then in the control group,3cases were clinical cure,37cases were improved and0case was inefficient. There was statistical difference between the two groups (P <0.05)After treatment, patients filled the self assessment questionnaires of VoiSS. The comparison indicated that the VoiSS of the treatment group was27.50±5.870, and the control group was17.13±4.713. After testing, there was statistical difference between the two groups (P<0.05). The VoiSS Scale I (defects) of integral treatment in the treatment was15.70±13.138, the control group was10.98±14.230. Comparisons of the objective assessment of voice after the treatment:the voice training group shows us Jitter difference valuel.266±0.547(%) and Shimmer difference valuel.589±0.604(%) then the other group JitterO.620±0.428(%) and Shimmer0.927±0.497(%), and the difference between the two group is significant (P<0.01); after the training program, though the F0and the NHR both change better than before (the training group’s F0D-value is28.307±12.612Hz and NHR D-value is0.036±0.027, the non-training group’s F0D-value is13.313±11.638Hz and NHR D-value is0.018±0.013, but there is no statistical difference between the two groups (P>0.05)ConelusionVoice therapy with acupuncture and Chinese herbal to cure chronic hoarseness (meaning vocal nodules and polyp of vocal cord and chronic laryngitis) is more effective than the treatment of acupuncture and Chinese herbal in the past on improving patients’self voice handicap and their voice quality, mainly on VoiSS, defects, physical, Jitter and Shimmer. Voice training can improve patients with voice disorders, correct the bad phonation habits, and it can be used as another clinical effective treatment of patients with chronic hoarseness.
