Hypothyroidism(referred to as hypothyroidism) refers to the reduction of thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion, or thyroid hormone can not play its physiological effects and lead to a decrease of metabolism, is the most common endocrine disease in dogs. As the thyroid hormone can affect the function of almost all of organs in the body, so the canine hypothyroidism can appear a wide range of clinical signs, including metabolic rate decline, abnormal skin, reproductive, neurological and cardiovascular abnormalities. The clinical symptoms of canine hypothyroidism is not typicaland nonspecific, so it is easily to lead to an erroneous diagnosis. This paper is aimed to compare and analyze the clinical symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the cases which admitted to the practice. Moreover, it can provide evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of canine hypothyroidism correctly. In this paper, the suspected cases of canine hypothyroidism were diagnosed by clinical diagnosis, skin detection, blood detection, biochemical detection, endocrine detection(the level of thyroxine) and other experimental methods. Cases of canine hypothyroidism were treated through oral levothyroxine sodium(synthetic thyroid hormone) combined with the symptomatic. Before the hypothyroidism symptoms disappeared completely, adjusting the frequency and dosage of medication according to the reaction of the dogs.Among canine cases which contacted during the practice in a hospital, there are 17 cases dogs diagnosed with hypothyroidism after clinical and laboratory diagnosis. After a series of treatment, 11 cases have an obvious effect on treatment, 3 cases are turned to the nearest hospital for treatment, while the master ofthe rest 3 cases chosen to give up.These results show that the hypothyroidism can be diagonosed through clinical diagnosis, examination of skin, blood routine examination, biochemical tests endocrine(total thyroxine level detection) detection and other experimental methods. The oral levothyroxine sodium(synthetic thyroxine) combined with symptomatic treatment method is effective for controlling the canine hypothyroidism.and has a good prognosis. Thus this method is a useful and reliable tool for the diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism.
