| For this thesis I researched the church building design by the priest, Fu Yi(Rev.Julius Felder). This priest belongs to the Bethlehem Catholic Foreign MissionSociety (SMB). Fu Yi originated from Switzerland. From1965to2007Fu Yi wasassigned to design and supervise church-related buildings for Bethlehem in Taitung,Taiwan. He designed more than one hundred church buildings. Indeed, he is the leadarchitecural designer for the Catholic Church in the eastern region of Taiwan. However, so far the architecural industry has no academic research related to his works.I would first like to summarized Fu Yi’s architectural works by geographic region, spatial orientation and by time period. In addition, I would like to conclude thecharacteristics of his architecture design and his spirit of design features. I would alsolike to explore the interrelationship of building location and regional mutualconstruction of Priest Fu’s design.Priest Fu was influenced by European modernist architecture design during hisprofessional training. He came to Taiwan at a time when Taiwan lacked creativity inarchitectural design. His creative architecture echoed in new concepts for designconstruction. Priest Fu continued the spirit of the architectural works of modernism andappropriately reflected the characteristics of the Eastern geographical environment. The context of conflict and integration of the two is the focus of this paper. Finally, I would like to discuss Priest Fu’s architectural works in the context ofarchitectural development in Taiwan and compare other church buildings of the sameperiod. Priest mFu’s impact and significance is notable for the development ofTaiwan’s current contemporary architecture. |
