Virtual reality technology is a new technology developed in recent year, and it can take advantage of the computer’s hardware and software resources for real world simulation, generating3D virtual environment. Users simply using certain peripheral devices (such as a mouse, keyboard, helmet display), can realize real-time roaming in the virtual environment on the Internet, and the user can generate a kind of immersion as in the real world in the auditory, visual, tactile and olfactory. What is the most important in Virtual reality technology is the designing of the3D models, and the fidelity of3D model directly affects the sense of reality of virtual reality environment, in order to ensure the quality and stability of the system model, we must adopt appropriate modeling approach, making the model not only having high quality, but also having low complexity of the scene.As a new technology, virtual reality technology has been widely applied in various fields. The3D virtual campus uses this technique to realize the simulation of campus roaming. Campus roaming system can provide a vivid three-dimensional space of campus, and the three dimensional landscape and environment of the school are digitalization and virtualization. Because it uses the virtual reality technology, so it has the two characteristics of virtual reality technology——immersive and interactive, that is to say the user in the3D simulation model of the campus generated by computer has a vivid feeling, and the user also can browse and interact the objects of the3D simulation campus.The basic implement method based on3DS Max and Virtools were studied in this paper, picked up YuCai environment, branch of the GuangXi Normal University for the virtual space, shooting through the various teaching building, library, the size of track and field, dormitory, campus road, green belt and other outdoor scene, then generating simulation scene graph.Focused on the following work:Model building:Before modeling, basing on the spatial relationships of the various buildings of YuCai campus to determine the three-dimensional case of scenario model to build. Making the prototype of the whole model by the3DS Max. And adopt the method of reducing polygon to simplification the model number of faces.Map production:shooting to collect to the local shape of each building, and we need to process these collected photos detailedly by Photoshop to achieve more realistic effects, and the "column" mapping way can remove the mark of stitching when making the sky, as well as the "method of seamless map" to solve the same problem when making a large area of the same empty scene, such as grassland area. Roaming generation:we should output the campus model with "NMO" format, and then imported it into the virtual interactive software——Virtools, by creating a camera to observe the virtual scene, at the same time, the using of "Grid" to realize the collision detection of character and scene.
