The current generation of migrant workers, which is comprised of nearly100million people, is the driving force of the industrial workplace. Both the traditionalmigrant workers, as well as the new generation ones, have made an invaluablecontribution to China’s socialist modernization. However, with this social andeconomic development, these new migrant workers face a myriad of challenges:finding employment, integrating into the city, social security and health coverage, aswell as other difficulties. Meanwhile, they have been labeled as "overly ambitious"and "unrealistic","delicate", or "thrifty" by public media. In order to fullyunderstand the media image of the new generation of migrant workers, we firstanalyzed this issue through the complex lens of Journalism and Communications.Previous studies have rarely scrutinized the media image of the new generation ofmigrant workers. Following this analysis of the problematic image, we will discussthe problem with the status quo and solutions to the current misunderstanding. The paper uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods, examining“The People’s Daily” discussion of the new generation of migrant workers from2010-2012; vital years of discussion on this topic. We found that the People’s Dailyhas constructed some distinct images of the new generation of migrant workers, withthe first image describing a dedicated, selfless, and courageous workforce. The secondimage depicts a group who are pursuing dreams of a university education, literaryfame, and entrepreneurial success, and the third the vulnerable group living on the“margins of society”. This is a far less glorified characterization. Contrastingly, the everyday opinion of this group, including the opinion of migrant workersthemselves, is often one of vulnerability. The reason for this disconnect is becauseof The People’s Daily reliance on unwavering propaganda messages that fail to lookat this issue from another angle. The hope of the publication is to promote ahigher-grade image, which may be removed from objective reality. This, in turn, hascreated an inaccurate image of the new generation of migrant workers. The migrantworkers have no voice in public media; therefore, the People’s Daily’s image of themis incomplete. The reporter’s interviews are not thorough enough, resulting in a poorimage and dissemination of results. So, the party newspaper is covering the new generation of migrant worker, theyshould increase the volume of coverage. This will strengthen the true image of thenew generation of migrant workers. In addition, the publication should position themas the target audience, as well as strengthen the interaction with the new generation ofmigrant workers, so as to enhance the image of the new generation of migrantworkers dissemination of results. In compliance with news rules, establish closenessto the masses, reality, and life, and construct an accurate, comprehensive,three-dimensional image of the new generation of migrant workers.
