Critical discourse analysis (CDA), which emerged in the1970s, is a discourse analysis model established on the basis of the theory of systemic functional grammar aiming to explore the ideology and power relation hidden in the discourse and reveal the influence of the ideology in discourse. In the thesis,45representative migrant workers-related news reports in People’s Daily, Southern Weekly, and Nan Fang Metropolis Daily are selected with Fairclough’s three-dimensional model adopted as the theoretical framework and Halliday’s three metafunctions in systemic functional grammar borrowed as analytical instrument, In order to reveal the hidden relation between language, ideology and power and explore how the news reporters make use of language to permeate the different political standpoints and social factors into the news discourse, the comparative critical analysis has been conducted from text, discursive practice and social practice, thus helping people to better understand the discursive power and ideology hidden behind the media discourses from the perspective of linguistics.Through the comparative analysis, it can be found that:first of all, it’s an effective analytic approach method to adopt Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and Halliday’s systemic functional grammar in CDA. Besides, all kinds of ideologies in news discourses are conveyed through the micro language since the reporters masterly apply linguistic devices to interpret the viewpoint towards certain news events, during which the standpoint of the power group of the newspaper is reflected indirectly. Therefore objective and just as they seem, the news reports have achieved the aim of engendering subtle influence on the readers. Finally, the thesis achieves its original intention to promote the readers’ critical sensibility and awareness when they read migrant workers-related news so as to strengthen the anti-control awareness of public discourses.
