The Discourse Perspective Of Mass Media On The New Generation Of Migrant Workers In People's Daily

The new generation of migrant workers are those who were born after1980's,from rural society to work in modern society above the age of16. This group ofpeople was a special product of Chinese social change, who have already taken60percent of the migrant workers and become the main force for the cities' economicdevelopment. This study takes the reports of the new generation of migrantworkers in the People's Daily of2010and2011as samples, using SPSS toquantitative analyze the length of reports, discourse types, discourse themes,sources, discourse angles as well as discourse positions of the reports of youngmigrant workers in the very newspaper through quantification statistical method.Besides, historical analysis and materialization study methods are used in deeplysample reading and analysis of the reports of new generation of migrant workers inthe People's Daily, therefore the concepts and features of the very newspaper asregard to reporting new generation of migrant workers are summed, which are thetop-down agenda settings for constructing the young migrant workers' images, thestern and inflexible positive depicting of the young migrant workers, the rationalreporting concepts, the unbalanced discourse power, etc. In the meanwhile, caseanalysis method is also used in this study, taking the report of Foxconncontinuous suicide in the People's Daily for example to be an evidence for thestudy, which brings this study to a deeper layer. Last but not the least, this studyproposes some own strategy suggestions towards the way of discourse that young migrant workers should adopt, the source selection and the value orientation for theyoung migrant workers which the People's Daily concerned. Thus prompt the massmedium to play a much more positive role in the procedure of young migrantworkers embedding into the new city life.
