This research takes the news reports aiming at the environmental issue of China fromNew York Times, a typical media which represents the mainstream opinion of the Westabout China, to study both the overall and changing environment image of Chinaconstructed by New York Times, in order to help understand its communication strategiesand influencing factors behind the news production and thus to make contribution tobetter improve China’s environmental communication to the West.Based on the quantitative analysis of the selected news reports related to China’senvironment from New York Times between the year2000to2012, the research firstsummarizes the features of the samples from both macro and micro level, and thenanalyzes the samples of the three typical topic including “global warming”,“energy” and“air pollution” with textual analysis, so as to outline both the overall and changingenvironment image of China. Later the study exams the features of text witting and at lastexplores the reporting strategies and influencing factors behind these coverages.
